Bio:

Hayley is a physiotherapist and emerging professional dancer. Her dance training first introduced her to the rehabilitation field through multiple personal injuries. Her appreciation for the help of physiotherapists and other rehabilitation professionals led her to explore this field through pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology at McMaster University, and subsequently a Master of Science in Physiotherapy at the same institution. After graduating from the physiotherapy program, she worked clinically in inpatient orthopedics and in research, where she explored the use of dance in chronic stroke. Additionally, she started teaching within the physiotherapy programs at McMaster University and the University of Toronto, where she is an adjunct lecturer in the latter.

Hayley started dancing at the age of 3, and competed in various genres of dance, before focusing on training in pre-professional ballet throughout high school, while specializing in dance at Unionville High School. During her Bachelor’s degree, she performed soloist roles with Hamilton City Ballet and choreographed ballet pieces for McMaster’s Recreational Dance Team. During her master’s, she continued her ballet training and launched her professional dance career, where she performed with the Dance : Corps company, at the Youth Day Global event, and as an artist in the Quarantine Qapsule digital archive on the Museum of Toronto website.

After her master’s, she performed as a soloist at the University of Toronto and was invited to perform solos as a guest performer with Georgia's Dance & Arts Cultural Centre. She was selected as an artist from across Canada to be featured in the Digital Shortworks festival in Stratford. She also danced as a company member with Moonlight Ballet. Further, she danced in the “Legend of Huli”, where she starred in a role alongside former professional dancers with the Mariinsky Ballet, and collaborated with award winning musicians.

Due to her passions in both dance and rehabilitation, she sought out opportunities that would integrate them together. This included volunteering with the Dance Ability Movement’s dance program for children with disabilities, being a clinician volunteer at the dancer screening at the National Ballet School of Canada, researching the benefits of dance for different clinical populations, helping to plan and organize events as part of the International Association for Dance Medicine and Science’s (IADMS) Dance for Health Advocacy Subcommittee, and collaborating with dance teachers and health care professionals to design a dancer screening tool as a member of the Healthy Dancer Canada Dancer Screening committee.

She has a special interest in treating dancers, where she aims to integrate her physiotherapy knowledge and dance experiences to treat this population and help them reach their goals.Hayley has experience in working with individuals with various orthopedic, neurological, and complex conditions. As a clinician, she strongly believes in collaborating with the patient to achieve their goals through a holistic and patient centred approach.
