Snowboarding
Sports
Snowboarding puts your head at risk. Speed, hard-packed snow, ice, rails, and jumps all add up, and a caught edge can whip the head into the ground before you can react. Head injuries are a recognised part of snow sports, and while a helmet reduces the risk, it does not make you concussion-proof. Most snowboarding concussions settle within a few weeks. The reason some drag on for months usually comes down to a handful of avoidable mistakes.
A concussion, or mild traumatic brain injury, happens when a direct or indirect force causes the brain to move rapidly inside the skull. The important thing to understand is that it is a functional disruption, not a structural one. Routine scans like CT and MRI usually come back normal, because the problem is in how the brain processes information and manages energy, not in visible damage. The symptoms are real even when the scan is clean.
Red flags that need emergency care:
If any red flag appears, get off the mountain and to emergency care immediately.
Mistake 1: Riding again the same day. Continuing to snowboard, or going back up the next day while still symptomatic, is the single most dangerous choice. During early recovery the brain is more vulnerable to a second injury, which raises the risk of second-impact syndrome, a rare but catastrophic event that can cause rapid, severe brain swelling. The rule is simple: never return to the slopes while symptomatic.
Mistake 2: Resting in a dark room for too long. The old advice to shut down completely until symptoms vanish has been overturned. The 2022 international consensus on concussion in sport confirmed that early, controlled physical activity within the first 24 to 48 hours is safe and beneficial, and that excessive rest can actually slow recovery. Modern management uses sub-threshold aerobic exercise, light activity kept just below the level that brings symptoms on, introduced early and progressed gradually.
Mistake 3: Treating only the head and ignoring the neck. The same force that concusses the brain also strains the neck. Cervical spine problems can produce headache, dizziness, and visual issues that overlap with concussion symptoms, and if the neck is ignored, those symptoms linger. This is why a whiplash-type neck injury and a concussion so often travel together.
Mistake 4: Waiting it out instead of getting treated. A single intervention rarely fixes a complex concussion, because no two are alike. One rider is dominated by dizziness and balance issues, another by neck pain and headaches, another by exertion intolerance. In one randomised controlled trial of athletes with persistent symptoms, combining cervical spine treatment and vestibular rehabilitation cleared 73 percent of participants for return to sport within eight weeks, compared with just 7 percent receiving standard care. That is more than ten times as many, and it is the difference between weeks and months.
Most concussions resolve within about 2 to 6 weeks, and a structured, individualised program is what keeps recovery on the shorter end. Effective care combines graded aerobic exercise, vestibular rehabilitation for dizziness and balance, cervical spine treatment, and visual-motor training, all matched to your specific symptoms.
Return to snowboarding follows a graduated protocol: light aerobic activity first, then sport-specific training, then a staged return to the slopes, only advancing when each stage stays symptom-free. Return to Sport Testing helps confirm you are genuinely ready rather than just feeling better on a good day.
If you have hit your head snowboarding and something feels off, the smart move is a proper assessment and a plan, not a wait-and-see approach that risks turning a short recovery into a long one.
