Skiing

Skiing is one of the most demanding sports your body can play, and GTA skiers feel it more than most, with a whole season packed into weekend trips up north and one big week out west, driving some of the highest knee injury rates in sport. At Vaughan Physiotherapy Clinic, our physiotherapists, chiropractors, and registered massage therapists work together to keep skiers at every level moving well, recovering faster, and staying on the mountain longer.

Stay on the Slopes

Whether you're racing gates, chasing powder, or protecting your weekend trips up north, skiing is harder on your body than it looks.
‍
Here's what every skier should know:

Below, we break down what skiing is really doing to your body, so you can keep skiing the sport you love, for as long as you want.

Built for Every Kind of Skier

Skiing doesn't hurt everyone the same way. Your age, your level, and how often you get out change what actually puts you at risk.

Junior Skiers (Under 18)

  • Kids ski year-round now, barely an off-season to recover
  • Young knees take the load from gates, jumps, and reps

Grow the base first, season by season. It beats the mileage.

Competitive Adults

  • Half of expert injuries hit up top, from fast falls
  • Most hurt experts skip wrist guards (60.9% of them)

The knee gets the headlines. The wrists pay.

Skiers 50 to 65

  • Every season raises the odds of a knee or head injury
  • Tibial plateau fractures climb as balance shifts

Cold, tired legs punish mistakes. Prep stops the bill.

Masters Skiers (65+)

  • A fall costs more after 65, as bone and tendon age
  • Balance beats mileage now, and trains at any age

Age doesn't end your skiing. An unprepared fall does.

Weekend Warriors

  • 2 to 3 injuries per 1,000 ski days, mostly fatigue
  • Agility and balance predict falls, better than fitness

Fitness gaps are forgivable. A cold first run isn't.

Coaches & Instructors

  • Demos and cold hours drive hip and low-back overuse
  • Teaching and taking load are two very different jobs

You're on snow more than anyone you teach. We keep you upright.

Did You Know?

The Big-Trip Spike

A season on short local hills does not prepare your legs for a week out west. Not even close.

  • Runs at Uplands or Earl Bales last a minute, while Blue Mountain and western descents last many, and sustained load is where tired legs give out
  • Injury rates sit around two to three per 1,000 ski days, and the spike lands hardest when your volume jumps overnight on the annual trip
  • Balance and lower-body agility are the traits that hold up under fatigue, and a sudden week of hard skiing tests both before your legs are ready

Lower-body agility and balance are among the strongest injury predictors, and one big trip exposes both fast

The Phantom Foot

Most ski ACL tears don't come from a big crash. They come from a slow slide backward.

  • You fall back, hips below the knees, uphill ski light, and the tail of the downhill ski twists the knee hard
  • Cold hamstrings fire slower, so the muscle that should guard the ACL shows up late
  • Modern boots fixed the broken leg of the 1970s, then sent those same forces straight up to the knee

Safer shins, busier knees. The ACL pays the difference.

Ski Knee Pain Doesn't Start at the Knee

The knee takes the blame for most ski injuries. It's usually carrying someone else's load.

  • The knee is the most injured site in skiing, at 27% to 41% of all injuries, but rarely the actual root cause
  • Weak hips and a soft core let the knee twist on every turn the trunk should have controlled
  • Late, tired hamstrings hand the joint forces it was never built to hold, and the ligament absorbs the difference

Where you feel it is the knee. Where we fix it is above and behind it.

Are You Training for the Ski Season Yet?

Ski season sneaks up. Blue Mountain opens, the March break trip out west gets booked, and bodies go straight from a desk to a black run with nothing in between.

Steve Podborski

What most skiers skip:

  • The six weeks before the first trip, the window that turns a rough season into a strong one
  • Lower-body agility and dynamic balance, the two strongest predictors of who stays healthy
  • Eccentric hamstring strength, the one quality that lets a knee absorb a bad edge instead of buckling

We Cover Your Events On-Site

From Nancy Greene race days to school ski trips and regional competitions, we bring the clinic to the hill so athletes get seen fast and get the right call in the moment.

On-site, we handle:

  • On-snow injury triage. We assess on the spot and make a clear stay-or-stop call so nobody skis on an injury that needs to come off the hill.
  • Taping & bracing. Knees, thumbs, and shoulders are the usual suspects, and we support them on site so a cleared athlete can finish the day.
  • Return-to-slope calls. After a fall or a head knock, we make the call on the evidence, not the adrenaline, and we hold the line on concussions.
  • Between-run recovery. Loose muscles are safe muscles, so we keep athletes moving well through a long, cold day.
  • Cold & fatigue monitoring. Cold muscles are slow muscles, and we watch for the fatigue that turns a tired body into an injured one.
  • Dynamic warm-up stations. We run proper warm-ups before racing so the first run is the protected one, not the risky one.

How We Help Skiers Stay Out on the Mountain

At Vaughan Physiotherapy Clinic, we work with skiers at every level, from Nancy Greene kids and Alpine Ontario racers to Blue Mountain weekenders and masters skiers. Whether you're dealing with a knee that isn't right after a fall, a low back that locks up by the last run, or dizziness that lingers after a head knock, we have the team to get you back on the mountain faster.

Physiotherapy

  • Assesses how your knee handles a bad edge, why your legs give out late in the day, and where your landing mechanics break down
  • Corrects the root cause, not just the symptom, so you're not stuck in a cycle of skiing, breaking down, and recovering
  • Manages your training load so your body can handle more days on snow without breaking down

Chiropractic

  • Restores mobility in the joints skiing beats up most, the spine, hips, knees, and ankles
  • When joints aren't moving properly, your body compensates and overloads surrounding structures every run, chiropractic stops that cycle
  • Gets the right muscles doing the work so the wrong ones stop taking the hit

Massage Therapy

  • Targets the specific tension areas in skiers, cooked quads from every turn, calves braced against the boot, and a low back that holds you upright all day
  • Delivers a real drop in delayed muscle soreness and a genuine gain in flexibility
  • Helps your body actually recover between ski days instead of just surviving them

We're not just a clinic, we're part of the ski community here in York Region. If you're feeling it on the hill, come see us off it.
