Rugby

Rugby is one of the most physically demanding contact sports in the GTA, and the body pays for every tackle, ruck, and scrum. At Vaughan Physiotherapy Clinic, our physiotherapists, chiropractors, and registered massage therapists work together to keep rugby players at every level moving well, recovering faster, and staying on the pitch longer.

Trusted by rugby players across the GTA

We work with rugby players and clubs across the GTA to keep forwards, backs, and front rowers healthy, on the pitch, and performing at their best.

Stay on the Pitch

Whether you're already feeling it or just want to keep playing healthy, rugby hits your body harder than most sports you'll ever play.

Here's what every player should know:

Below, we break down what rugby is really doing to your body, so you can keep playing the game you love, for as long as you want.

Built For Every Position

Rugby injuries don't look the same for every player. We build care around the player you actually are.

Front Row

  • Neck and spine take the load from scrum compression
  • Cervical strain, disc issues, and stingers build over a career

The scrum is technical, not just brute force. Protect the neck now, or it decides when you stop.

Back Row & Locks

  • Shoulders and AC joints from constant tackling and rucking
  • Repeat dislocations are the risk that ends seasons

You make the most tackles on the field. Shoulder stability is what keeps you making them.

Halfbacks

  • Kicking and passing load on the hip, groin, and hamstring
  • Exposed in the tackle with less size to absorb it

You run the game. Staying on the pitch is how you keep running it.

Outside Backs

  • Hamstrings, ACLs, ankles are the cost of sprinting and cutting at full speed
  • Non-contact tears happen on the plant foot

Speed is the asset. Protecting the cut is how you keep it.

Youth Players

  • Growth plates break differently than grown bodies
  • Concussion awareness and load management come first

The habits built now keep rugby fun. Catch it early, train it right.

Returning to Sport

  • Rugby is brutal on rebuilt joints
  • But only with the right progression back to contact

Built around your history, not a generic protocol.

Did You Know?

The Tackler Pays the Price

Everyone watches the ball carrier. The player getting hurt more often is the one making the tackle.

  • Tacklers are injured at a higher rate than ball carriers
  • The tackle drives most concussions, shoulder dislocations, and fractures
  • Good tackle technique isn't just about stopping the runner, it's about protecting yourself

The hit you make matters as much as the hit you take. Technique protects both.

The Scrum Hits Hardest

The scrum only causes a small share of match injuries. The ones it does cause are the serious ones.

  • When a pack buckles or slips, the neck and spine take the force
  • Front rowers need real isometric neck strength, the ability to hold steady under a heavy, moving load
  • The tight head prop sits in the most compressed, most vulnerable position of all

Low injury count, high stakes. This is the one you train for before you ever need it.

Fatigue Is When It Happens

Most injuries don't come from the first big hit. They come when players are tired.

  • Injury rates climb in the second half and the final quarter as legs and focus fade
  • Tired muscle absorbs force the way fresh muscle doesn't, and technique slips
  • The players who fade late are the ones getting hurt late

Conditioning isn't just about performance. It's how you stay safe when the match wears on.

Are You Training For Rugby?

Up here, rugby has deep roots, from local club sides to Canada's national teams on the world stage. Watching a back line move the ball wide, or a flanker win a turnover at the breakdown, is a reminder of what the body is capable of at the highest level, and how much preparation goes into staying there.

If you're stepping up your own game this season, your body needs to be ready for a different level of demand.

What most players skip:

  • Injury rates climb fastest in the ramp-up. Jumping into pre-season and contact without a base is when bodies break down
  • Injury rates climb fastest in the ramp-up. Jumping into pre-season and contact without a base is when bodies break down
  • Skipping the neck and shoulder prep is how a routine tackle becomes a stinger that lingers

We Cover Your Events On-Site

On-site physio for rugby matches, tournaments, and camps, led by a certified sport physiotherapist trained to assess and treat injuries pitch-side, so a small injury never becomes a season-ending one.

On-site, we handle:

  • Acute injury triage. We tell a simple strain from something serious, like a fracture, a serious knee injury, or a concussion, fast, before a player makes it worse.
  • Taping & bracing. Ankle, wrist, and shoulder support applied on the spot so players can keep moving safely.
  • Return-to-play calls. A clear, professional decision on whether it's safe to keep playing, before a tweak turns into a tear, and with concussion protocol taken seriously.
  • Between-half recovery. Soft tissue work and assisted stretching that fights the fatigue of a long match, so one half doesn't cost a player the next.
  • Hydration & heat monitoring. Full contact in early-season heat is a real risk, we keep an eye on it.
  • Dynamic warm-up stations. Proper prep for hips, hamstrings, shoulders, and neck, the prep that actually prevents the most common rugby injuries.

How We Help Rugby Players Stay in the Game

At Vaughan Physiotherapy Clinic, we work with rugby players at every level, from youth and high school programs to club and university athletes. Whether you're dealing with a neck that won't settle after a season in the front row, a shoulder that's taken too many hits, or a knee that's never been right since the last cut, we have the team to get you back on the pitch faster.

Physiotherapy

  • Assesses how you load your neck and back in the scrum, why your shoulder flares up after contact, and where your knee mechanics break down on the cut
  • Corrects the root cause, not just the symptom, so you're not stuck in a cycle of playing, breaking down, and recovering
  • Manages your training load so your body can handle more contact and more reps without breaking down

Chiropractic

  • Restores mobility in the joints rugby beats up most: spine, shoulder, hips, and neck
  • When joints aren't moving properly, your body compensates and overloads surrounding structures every ruck. Chiropractic stops that cycle
  • Gets the right muscles doing the work so the wrong ones stop taking the hit

Massage Therapy

  • Targets the specific areas that accumulate tension in rugby players: neck and shoulder stiffness from contact, lower-back and hip tightness from the scrum, heavy legs from sprint and collision load
  • Means you're not starting each session already behind
  • Helps your body actually recover between matches instead of just surviving them

We're not just a clinic, we're part of the rugby community here in Vaughan. If you're feeling it on the pitch, come see us off it.
