Snowboarding

Snowboarding is one of the most popular winter sports in the GTA — a quick drive to the hills and one of the Winter Olympics' marquee events — and with that comes real demands on your body. At Vaughan Physiotherapy Clinic, our physiotherapists, chiropractors, and registered massage therapists work together to keep riders at every level riding well, recovering faster, and staying on the mountain longer.

Stay on the Mountain

Whether you're already feeling it or just want to keep riding pain-free, snowboarding is harder on your body than it looks.

Here's what every rider should know:

Below, we break down what snowboarding is really doing to your body, so you can keep riding the sport you love, for as long as you want.

Built For Every Rider

Snowboarding injuries don't look the same at every stage. We tailor care to where you are.

First Day Riders

  • Injury risk peaks in your first days on snow
  • Wrist fractures and sprains from catching an edge

Learn to fall now, or spend the season in a cast.

Green-Run Cruisers

  • Tailbone bruises, shoulder knocks, ankle rolls
  • A groomer loads you differently than day one

The fix isn't staying home. It's learning* how your body absorbs a fall.

Park Riders

  • Shoulder and wrist injuries from hard landings
  • Jumping drives ~1/3 of injuries — worse when tired

A clean landing is the difference between a long season and an early one.

All-Mountain Riders

  • Speed and variable terrain raise every fall's stakes
  • Knee, shoulder, head injuries climb on rough runs

Riding harder terrain means a smarter body, not just a braver one.

Riders 35+

  • Joints don't take hard falls like they used to
  • Wrists, shoulders, knees, low back hurt longer

You don't need to ride less. You need to* train and recover smarter.

Back on the Board

  • Your tolerance dropped even if the mountain didn't
  • Ramp up slowly — not a full day off the couch

Built around your history — not a generic protocol.

Did You Know?

The Edge That Catches You

Catch an edge and the board stops while your body keeps going. The toe edge sends you face-first, hands out.

  • That's a textbook fall on an outstretched hand — the wrist-fracture setup
  • Wrists take nearly 30% of snowboard injuries vs. ~3% in skiing
  • Fists closed, roll it out, don't reach — the beginner's best fix

The wrist injury didn't come out of nowhere. It came from an edge you never saw catch.

Snowboarder's Ankle Isn't a Sprain

One injury is named after the sport. "Snowboarder's fracture" is a break in the ankle's lateral talus, often mistaken for a bad sprain.

  • Roughly 15x more likely in snowboarders than other athletes
  • Easily missed on a standard X-ray, so riders keep riding on it
  • Treated as a sprain it won't heal — risking long-term ankle problems

Blaming a rolled ankle? If it isn't settling, it needs more than a standard X-ray.

Your Wrist Guards Live in the Lodge

The gear that stops the most common snowboard injury is the gear most riders leave behind. Wrist guards cut wrist-injury risk by up to half.

  • Protection is greatest where risk is highest: beginners, first days on snow
  • They don't stop you riding — they stop one fall ending your trip
  • Add a helmet — proven to cut head-injury risk and severity

Most riders skip the guards to look the part. They're the cheapest insurance in the sport.

Are You Training for Snowboarding?

The season's coming and the hills are calling — and if you're stepping up your riding, whether it's your first park lap or your first backcountry day, your body needs to be prepared for a different level of demand.

Mark McMorris

What most riders skip:

  • Injury rates climb when you ramp up intensity — sending bigger jumps and steeper terrain without building up to them is when bodies break down
  • Riding cold does more harm than good — a proper dynamic warm-up for wrists, shoulders, ankles, and hips is what actually prepares your body for hard falls
  • Skipping wrist guards and a helmet to look the part is one of the most common — and most preventable — reasons riders end up in our clinic

We Cover Your Events On-Site

On-site physio for snowboard competitions, camps, and clinics — led by a certified sport physiotherapist trained to assess and treat injuries on the spot, so a small crash never becomes a season-ending one.

On-site, we handle:

  • Acute injury triage. We tell a simple sprain from something serious — like a wrist fracture or a snowboarder's ankle — fast, before a rider makes it worse.
  • Taping & bracing. The wrist, ankle, and shoulder support that lets a rider keep going safely, applied on the spot.
  • Return-to-ride calls. A clear, professional decision on whether it's safe to keep riding — before a tweak turns into a tear.
  • Between-run recovery. Soft tissue work and stretching that fights the fatigue of a long day on the hill, so one crash doesn't cost the rest of the trip.
  • Concussion awareness. We know the signs of a head injury and when a rider needs to stop, not push through.
  • Dynamic warm-up stations. Proper prep for wrists, shoulders, ankles, and hips — the areas that take the hardest hits on a board.

How We Help Riders Stay in the Game

At Vaughan Physiotherapy Clinic, we work with snowboarders at every level — from first-timers on the bunny hill to competitive park and all-mountain riders. Whether you're dealing with a wrist that won't settle down, an ankle that was written off as a sprain, or a shoulder that took a hard landing, we have the team to get you back on the mountain faster.

Physiotherapy

  • Assesses how you load your wrists on a fall, why your ankle still hurts weeks later, and where your mechanics break down on landings
  • Corrects the root cause — not just the symptom — so you're not stuck in a cycle of riding, crashing, and recovering
  • Manages your training load so your body can handle more time on the mountain without breaking down

Chiropractic

  • Restores mobility in the joints snowboarding beats up most — wrist, shoulder, ankle, and lower back
  • When joints aren't moving properly, your body compensates and overloads surrounding structures every run — chiropractic stops that cycle
  • Gets the right muscles doing the work so the wrong ones stop taking the hit

Massage Therapy

  • Targets the specific areas that accumulate tension in riders — forearm and wrist tightness from catching falls, shoulder stiffness from hard landings, lower-limb and back fatigue from a full day of turns
  • Means you're not starting each run already behind
  • Helps your body actually recover between days on the hill instead of just surviving them

We're not just a clinic — we're part of the riding community here in Vaughan. If you're feeling it on the mountain, come see us off it.
