Custom orthopaedic braces

Custom orthopaedic braces for knee and joint support.

Precision-engineered custom orthopaedic braces delivering advanced biomechanical support and therapeutic joint stabilization for optimal mobility and pain relief.

At Vaughan Physiotherapy, we specialize in providing high-quality custom orthopaedic braces designed to enhance your mobility and reduce pain. Our expert team works with leading manufacturers including medi, Bauerfeind and DonJoy to ensure you receive the most effective support for your specific condition.

Understanding custom braces

Custom orthopaedic braces are specialized medical devices designed to provide targeted support and facilitate proper movement. Unlike off-the-shelf options, these braces are precisely crafted to match your unique measurements and body contours, ensuring optimal effectiveness and comfort.

Orthopaedic braces are prescribed by a health professional in order to protect, support and facilitate movement. It is important that these products are carefully matched to an individual's diagnosis and needs to be effective. This can require specific measurements and assessment.

Conditions improved by custom braces

Our custom braces effectively address various conditions, including:

Clinical studies have shown that over 70% of knee osteoarthritis patients experience significant pain reduction and increased activity levels when using custom braces.Barnes CL et al. American Journal of Orthopaedics 2002 Jul; 31(7): 396-401.

Braces are designed to restrict potentially harmful movement and relieve the pain caused by ligamentous knee injuries, osteoarthritis and certain neurological conditions. We also prescribe conservative care management such as corrective exercise and soft tissue therapy. Braces are very effective for low back pain, elbow pain, knee injuries, wrist injuries and more.

The customization process

Initial assessment

Our customization process begins with a thorough evaluation by our healthcare professionals. During this assessment, we:

  • Review your medical history and specific condition
  • Take precise measurements of the affected area
  • Evaluate your movement patterns and limitations
  • Discuss your lifestyle and activity goals

Fitting and adjustment

Once your custom brace is manufactured, you'll return for a professional fitting where we:

  • Ensure proper alignment and comfortable fit
  • Make necessary adjustments
  • Demonstrate correct application and removal
  • Verify unrestricted movement within safe parameters

Risk prevention

Proper fitting is crucial for effective treatment. Poorly fitted braces can lead to:

  • Reduced effectiveness of the treatment
  • Skin irritation or discomfort
  • Restricted blood flow
  • Improper joint movement

Staying active with your brace

Your custom brace is designed to support an active lifestyle. Many patients successfully return to activities such as golf, hiking, tennis, gardening and regular exercise routines. The brace can be worn comfortably under most clothing, including athletic wear, allowing you to maintain your regular activities while receiving necessary support.

Insurance and coverage

Custom orthopaedic braces may be covered by your insurance. Our team can:

  • Verify your insurance coverage
  • Help you understand your benefits and coverage options
  • Provide detailed cost information
  • Prepare and provide all necessary documentation for your insurance claim
  • Assist with insurance claim submissions
  • Offer direct billing to select insurance providers for your convenience

Please note: most insurance providers require a doctor's prescription or note to process your claim. We recommend checking with your insurance provider about their specific requirements before your appointment.

Product warranty and returns

We stand behind the quality of our products. All braces come with manufacturer warranties, and our team will assist with warranty claims if needed.

Once a brace has been worn, fitted and tested in the clinic, it is a final sale.

Care and maintenance

Proper care and maintenance will maximize the lifespan and effectiveness of your custom brace.

  • Clean your brace regularly with mild soap and lukewarm water
  • Allow to air dry completely before wearing
  • Check for signs of wear or damage daily
  • Keep fasteners clean and functional
  • Follow your prescribed wearing schedule
  • Remove the brace during bathing or swimming
  • Inspect your skin daily for any signs of irritation
  • Report any fit issues promptly to your healthcare provider

Custom orthotics and shoes

Custom orthotics and shoes.

Personalized insoles designed just for your feet, providing premium comfort and support to help you move through life with ease.

Understanding custom orthotics

Custom orthotics are specialized medical devices designed to address various foot, lower limb and back problems. Unlike generic insoles, these devices are precisely moulded to your unique foot structure, providing targeted support where you need it most.

Custom orthotics work by supporting balanced weight distribution across your feet and providing efficient shock absorption during walking or running activities. When properly prescribed, they can significantly reduce pain, stabilize joint motion and enhance your overall mobility.

At Vaughan Physiotherapy, we are proud partners with leading orthotic manufacturer Orthotic Energy to ensure you receive the highest quality custom orthotics that make a real difference in your daily life. These devices can be used alone or paired with orthopaedic footwear for maximum effectiveness.

Conditions improved by custom orthotics

  • Plantar fasciitis and heel pain
  • Arch problems and flat feet
  • Lower back pain
  • Knee and hip alignment issues
  • Sports-related injuries
  • Balance and stability concerns
  • Muscle development issues in legs and feet

Your health professional may also prescribe custom orthotics for people who have positional concerns with their feet or legs. This can include those with underdeveloped leg and foot muscles. Typically we will recommend a custom orthotic if an off-the-shelf device or other treatments, such as exercises at home, haven't proven effective.

The benefits of custom orthotics

While over-the-counter insoles may provide temporary relief, custom orthotics offer several distinct advantages:

  • Precisely engineered to your unique foot structure
  • Professional assessment and fitting process
  • Higher quality materials for better durability
  • Targeted support for specific conditions
  • Improved walking mechanics and posture
  • Enhanced athletic performance
  • Long-term pain relief and prevention

Cost and coverage

Investing in your foot health is a decision that can significantly impact your daily comfort and long-term mobility. The cost of custom orthotics typically ranges from $400 to $800 CAD, which includes the initial assessment and evaluation, custom casting and manufacturing, professional fitting and adjustments, and follow-up care.

Many insurance plans provide coverage for custom orthotics. Coverage can vary significantly between providers, with some offering full coverage up to a specified maximum, partial coverage (typically 80 to 100%) or annual or bi-annual coverage limits. We recommend checking with your insurance provider for specific coverage details and requirements.

Our custom fitting process

Comprehensive evaluation

Our specialists begin with a thorough examination including:

  • Range of motion testing for lower-extremity joints
  • Muscle strength and flexibility assessment
  • Gait analysis and walking patterns
  • Footwear inspection and wear pattern analysis
  • Lifestyle and activity level assessment

Custom casting

We use advanced casting techniques to create an exact mould of your feet, ensuring your orthotics will provide optimal support. This process involves non-weight bearing neutral position moulding, precise foot positioning, professional plaster casting, and detailed measurements and specifications.

Manufacturing and fitting

Your custom orthotics are crafted using high-quality materials selected specifically for your needs and activities. We ensure a perfect fit through a heat-moulded graphite or plastic foundation, durable, comfortable covering materials, professional fitting and adjustments, and a follow-up assessment for optimal results.

"The manufacture of functional foot orthotics is thus a multi-step process involving detailed and intricate cast correction, orthotic fabrication and application of additional items prescribed by your podiatrist for the treatment of your specific condition."Richard M. Olsen

Care and maintenance

  • Inspect them monthly for signs of wear
  • Clean regularly with mild soap and water
  • Allow to air dry completely
  • Replace approximately every 2 years, depending on usage
  • Schedule regular check-ups to assess orthotic condition

When to replace your orthotics

Consider replacement if you experience visible damage or wear, significant lifestyle changes, recent surgery or weight changes, recurring pain or discomfort, or if your orthotics are more than 2 years old.

Comprehensive care beyond orthotics

At Vaughan Physiotherapy, custom orthotics are just one part of our holistic approach to your health and mobility. Our multidisciplinary team brings together diverse expertise to provide complete care, including Sport Physiotherapists, Vestibular Therapists, Registered Massage Therapists and Chiropractors. Your plan may include custom orthotics paired with therapeutic exercises, soft tissue therapy, balance training with vestibular therapy, sport-specific conditioning and injury prevention, and chiropractic care for optimal alignment. Don't let foot pain or mobility issues hold you back.

Compression garments

Compression socks and stockings.

Gentle support through therapeutic pressure for better circulation, less discomfort and faster healing.

Understanding compression garments

Compression socks and stockings are specialized garments that work by applying gentle pressure to your legs, helping blood flow back toward your heart more effectively. They're often recommended for people experiencing leg swelling, aching or heaviness due to various conditions. These stockings are most effective when worn consistently throughout your daily activities, though you can remove them when sleeping or lying down.

Benefits of compression stockings

Compression stockings can help:

  • Reduce swelling in your legs
  • Improve circulation
  • Prevent blood clots after surgery
  • Reduce leg fatigue and discomfort
  • Manage varicose veins
  • Support recovery after surgery

When should you not use compression stockings?

You should avoid using compression stockings if you have:

  • Poor circulation in your legs
  • Severe nerve damage in your legs
  • An allergy to the stocking material
  • Severe leg swelling
  • Certain skin conditions
  • Unusually shaped legs that prevent proper fitting

Always consult with your healthcare provider before using compression stockings, especially if you have any medical conditions.

Tips for using compression stockings

  • Put your stockings on first thing in the morning when your legs have the least swelling
  • Wash them before first use to soften the fabric
  • Have two pairs so you always have a clean set available
  • Use a stocking butler or other aids if you find them difficult to put on
  • Cover any open wounds with a dressing before putting on your stockings

When to seek help

Contact your healthcare provider if you experience numbness in your toes, pain while wearing the stockings, darkening of your toes or persistent discomfort.

HOW INSURANCE WORKS

Most plans cover braces with the right paperwork

Coverage depends on your plan. Our front desk can call your insurer with you before anything is ordered, so you know what they need.

  1. 1

    Check your coverage

Ask your insurer what they need. Many plans ask for a doctor's note or referral, and some want a written estimate, which we can give you.

  2. 2

Pay and sign before we order

We order your product once it is paid for and you have signed our product waiver. Items we have in stock are ready right away.

  3. 3

We fit it, you get the paperwork

We email you when it arrives. Your therapist fits it and you get a paid invoice and receipt to send in with your doctor's note.

  4. 4

    You submit the claim

We do not submit brace claims to insurers, so you send the paperwork to your plan yourself.

  5. 5

    Car accident (MVA)

If your product is part of a car accident claim, it is billed to your auto insurer instead, so there is no upfront payment.

  6. 6

    Orthotics

Custom orthotics include a gait assessment and casting. You get the biomechanics report, proof of manufacturing and paid invoice for your claim.
