Figure Skating

Figure skating looks effortless, but every jump, spin, and landing puts real demands on your body. At Vaughan Physiotherapy Clinic, our physiotherapists, chiropractors, and registered massage therapists work together to keep skaters at every level moving well, recovering faster, and staying on the ice longer.

Stay on the Ice

Whether you're already feeling it or just want to keep skating pain-free, figure skating is harder on your body than it looks.

Here's what every skater should know:

Below, we break down what figure skating is really doing to your body, so you can keep skating the sport you love, for as long as you want.

Built For Every Skater

Figure skating injuries don't look the same at every level. We tailor care to where you are.

Learn to Skate

  • Most injuries come from falls, not jumps
  • Wrist bumps. Sore ankles. Usually boots that don't fit

Build good habits now, or spend next season undoing bad ones.

Singles Skaters

  • Stress fractures and jumper's knee top the list
  • 50 to 100 jumps a session, landed on one leg

The fix isn't rest. It's managing how many jumps you land.

Pairs & Ice Dance

  • Acute injuries from lifts, throws, and falls
  • Head, shoulder, and wrist take more hits than in singles

A clean lift is the difference between a full season and a short one.

Synchro Skaters

  • Most acute injuries happen in team elements
  • Intersections and blocks carry the highest collision risk

You're not skating alone. You need to react fast, not just skate well.

Growing Skaters

  • Growth spurts shift strength and flexibility fast
  • Knee pain and back stress injuries show up here

You don't need to skate less. You need to train around the growth.

Returning to the Ice

  • After an injury or concussion, the jumps come last
  • But only with the right progression

Built around your history, not a generic protocol.

Did You Know?

The Boot Problem

Stiff boots feel supportive. They also move the load.

  • The boot locks your ankle, so the landing force goes up the chain
  • Your knees, hips, and lower back absorb what your ankle can't
  • Poor fit leads to lace bite, heel bumps, and bursitis

The injury didn't come from the jump. It came from the boot.

Every Landing Counts

One landing looks easy. Hundreds a week add up.

  • Landings hit at 4 to 5 times your body weight, on one leg
  • The same leg takes the impact, session after session
  • Sudden jumps in training volume are a common trigger for stress fractures

Most skaters blame their technique. The real problem is usually their jump count.

Back Pain Isn't Normal

About 1 in 3 young skaters with back pain has a stress fracture in the spine. Laybacks and Biellmann spins are the biggest culprits.

  • Repeated back bending loads the lower spine
  • Tight hip flexors add to the arch during spins and landings
  • Pain that lingers after practice. That is the warning sign

A sore back isn't part of the sport. It's the difference between a few weeks off and a full season out.

Are You Training for Competition Season?

Tryouts, tournaments, and comebacks after injury all ask more of your body than regular play. Ramp up the right way and you stay on the ice. Ramp up blind and you break down.

What most players skip:

  • Injury rates peak in the first weeks of ramping up intensity. Jumping into camp without a plan is when bodies break down.
  • Static stretching before you skate does more harm than good. A dynamic warm-up is what actually prepares your body.
  • Preseason adductor strengthening cuts groin strains by up to 79%. Skipping it is the most common mistake in hockey.

We Cover Your Events On-Site

On-site physio for hockey tournaments, leagues, and camps, led by a certified sport physiotherapist trained to assess and treat injuries rink-side, so a small injury never becomes a season-ending one.

On-site, we handle:

  • Acute injury triage. We tell a simple strain from something serious, fast, before a player makes it worse.
  • Taping & bracing. On-the-spot support so players can keep moving safely.
  • Concussion sideline screening. A trained eye on every head contact and a clear call on whether it's safe to return.
  • Return-to-play decisions. A professional call before a tweak turns into a tear.
  • Between-period recovery. Soft tissue work and assisted stretching that fights the fatigue of a long day.
  • Dynamic warm-up stations. Proper prep for hips, groin, and shoulders before the first whistle.

How We Help Hockey Players Stay in the Game

At Vaughan Physiotherapy Clinic, we work with hockey players at every level, from minor hockey and beer league to competitive rep and old-timer play. Whether it's a groin that won't settle, lingering dizziness after a hit, or a back that tightens up shift by shift, we have the team to get you back on the ice faster.

Physiotherapy

  • Rebuilds your stride. Restores the adductor and core strength skating depends on.
  • Fixes the root cause. Not just the symptom, so you break the play, break-down, recover cycle.
  • Screens your risk. Strength-ratio testing catches groin and hip problems before they happen.

Chiropractic

  • Restores joint mobility. In the spine and joints checking and skating beat up most.
  • Stops the compensation. When joints aren't moving right, everything around them overloads.
  • Eases chronic pain. Hands-on care for low back and neck, backed by strong evidence.

Massage Therapy

  • Speeds recovery. Cuts delayed muscle soreness between games.
  • Real recovery. Your body rebuilds between games instead of just surviving them.
  • No head start lost. You're not beginning every shift already behind.
